Running in Slow Motion Captured by an iPhone

  •      One of the funnest parts of practice in biomechanics is reviewing slow motion of your patients from their smart phone. This feature can be used in your office, or by showing patients a video like this having them be filmed in the gym by a friend. Of course, this includes all sports, especially those with repetitive motions where your intervention might prove crucial. Watch this video for the first minute or so only. It captured a patient running with great stability shoes (New Balance 860) and good orthotic devices. In reviewing the video for the patient who was experiencing iliotibial band syndrome on the right, I decided to lessen the varus correction. This lessening of the varus correction was accomplished by adding a Denton modification and inskiving the medial rearfoot post by 30 degrees. These simple in-office procedures cured the iliotibial symptoms over the next several weeks and took 10 minutes of office time.
