About Toby Miller
Toby Miller began snowboarding at six years old. His family felt he was so talented that they moved to Lake Tahoe, California two years later so that Miller was closer to the mountains to practice and compete.
In 2013, Miller won the U.S. Snowboard Association’s National Championships in halfpipe and in his World Cup debut at 16 years old, Miller placed ninth in the U.S. Grand Prix at Mammoth Mountain.
Miller won his first Junior World Championships in 2018 after finishing runner-up twice before. He also finished fourth in the 2019 FIS Snowboard, Freestyle Ski and Freeski World Championships, just 1.25 points behind a podium finish. In that event, he was also the only American to qualify for the halfpipe snowboarding final.
Miller often trains with U.S. Olympian and snowboarding legend Shaun White and White’s coach, J.J. Thomas.
What advice and solutions did you take away?
I was never able to wear high performance snowboard boots due to having really small feet. Root Functional Orthotics allowed me to fit into boots that are a size too big with shims and the custom orthotic.
It’s been a game changer.
Have you adjusted any workout routines?
I have started to work on arch strength and overall ankle mobility in the gym and have noticed lots of improvement in everyday life.
The orthotic process taught me a lot about how my ankles were aligned with the rest of my body and where they should be for maximum performance. I took this information and changed the angles of my snowboard bindings.
Not only did this give me more stability, my ankles don’t hurt after a day on the mountain.
Are there any specific improvements you’ve noticed in everyday life?
The biggest improvement in everyday life is not waking up every morning after a day of snowboarding with sore ankles. The orthotics for my shoes have made just everyday walking so much more pleasant.
I can be on my feet for a full day and my feet aren’t tired!

Before the custom orthotic process I thought living with ankle pain was the new normal. After working with them and getting the perfect orthotics created I was able to snowboard pain free for the first time in two years!
I truly cannot be more appreciative!
